NOTICE: Hence the registery is open!

This Hemerocallis Pollen Exchange Board will become active as soon as the first blossoms of 2009 open. If you wish to take part, you must be or become a member of Hemerocallis Europa e.V. and register with the Hemerocallis-Europa PollenExchange webmaster via the contact form.

The exchange board consists of two levels.

  1. In the Pollen Pool are varieties that have already been donated and may be directly requested. Donations are desired!
  2. In the Pollen Bank varieties are listed that may be available, according to bloom season and must be requested from the providing party.

During the season both lists will be regularly up-dated.

In the long term, the idea behind the Pollen Exchange website is to maintain a data bank of pollens and their potential providers for members use.

THE BASIC RULES

  1. Exchanges are to be 1:1.
  2. Desired pollen and exchanged pollen should represent similar worth.
  3. Each donated portion of pollen will be noted with a bonus point.
  4. Each required portion of pollen will be deducted from the bonus point account.

REGISTRATION AND USE

  • With registration the members declare themselves ready to make available pollen from their own gardens to the exchange, as well give permission to pass their name and E-Mail address to members interested in their pollen offer.
  • The members are required to deal truthfully and honestly with their offerings.
  • After registration a list of preferably recent introductions (less than 10 years) or hyrbridizer-relevent historic varieties from which pollen would be available should be submitted. These varieties will be listed in the pollen bank anonymously.
  • After discussion with the webmaster, members are to donate pollen for the Pool (2-5 portions). These donations will be credited as bonus points to the donors account or directly exchanged to obtain other pollen(s).
  • Pollen may be requested directly from the Pool or through contact with the webmaster from the Pollen Bank, who will be liason with the other donor.
  • Should a donator's pollen be requested, this donator will receive a bonus point for each portion sent, while the receiver will have a point for each portion deducted from his account.
  • Shipping costs will always be paid by the receiving party.

HARVESTING AND STORING POLLEN

Hemerocallis pollen keeps very well. Stored dry (long storage under refrigeration) pollen will remain potent over the season. Shipping via normal post is not a problem.

Points to consider:

  • For storage, small vials or micro-tubes (1.5ml from the pharmacy) or similar have proved successful. They are filled to halfway with dessicating gel, with a small bit of cotton wadding on top upon which the pollen is placed.
  • Harvesting pollen should be done on dry days only. It is ripe when the anthers open and the pollen is light and powdery, which typically happens by late mornings.
  • All utensils must be clean!  It is best to use tweezers or small scissors to harvest the anthers, which are then placed directly in the labeled, small vial on the wadding and sealed.
  • Ideally, one portion pollen consists of 6 anthers, but at least 2 are acceptable.

For taking part in the Pollen Exchange we have planned to implement the use of micro-tubes with dessicating gel. A starter set (50 g dessicating gel  + 25 micro-tubes) may be ordered free of charge from the Pollen Exchange webmaster after registration.

The micro-tubes are small enough to fit into a heavy weight large-letter envelope (up to 2 cm thick, 1.45 Euro inland post).

The dessicating gel contains a heavy-metal free indicator which changes from orange to clear or green, if the gel has absorbed 33 % of its weight in moisture. Regeneration is possible in the oven at 130 degree, when it will again turn orange and be reuseable.

The foto shows the intended usage of the micro-tubes. The tube to the right show the gel changing colour to clear.

ORDERING FROM THE POLLEN POOL

  1. Exchange offers are sent to the Pollen Exchange webmaster for approval.
  2. Ordering per post with the agreed upon amount of exchange pollen (or against Bonus Point account), which is sent to the  Pollen Exchange webmaster accompanied by a post-paid envelope (foreign orders: please send a self-addressed return envelope + 2 Euros for the postage).
  3. The ordered pollen is sent out by the webmaster.

ORDERING FROM THE POLLEN BANK

  1. Send your trade offer to the Pollen Exchange webmaster.
  2. After acceptance of the trade offer, you will receive the name and the mail address of the required donator.
  3. Contact the donator and clear the availability particulars.
  4. Assuming the donor can supply the required pollen, the requesting party is to send the trade pollen to the webmaster and
  5. send an empty micro-tube prepared with dessicating gel, plus a self addressed return envelope with postage attached to the donor(foreign orders: please send a self addressed envelope + 2 Euros for the postage).
  6. The donor is to then send the requested via return mail.
  7. Upon completion of the transaction the webmaster is to be informed.
